Youth Programs

Rock River Training Corporation provides opportunities for young people between ages 14-21 in Boone, Stephenson, and Winnebago Counties to complete their education and train in areas that help build a foundation that will enhance their future.

Youth Programs for in-school youth help them stay in school by providing tutoring, counseling, mentoring, career exploration, work experiences, and overall support. The expectations of the work place permeate the programs which, in cooperation with the school districts, prepare youth to enter additional education or training after graduation from high school and/or to enter full-time employment. Youth may be in a WIA youth program for several years.

Programs for youth who have dropped out of school emphasize the youth's return to school,or assist them with obtaining a GED as a basic step on their road to self-sufficiency. Youth programs provide basic skills/GED instruction, tutoring, counseling, mentoring, career exploration, and work experience. The program staff keep in contact with youth for at least one year after they leave the program.

Just as the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) has impacted RRTC's Adult programs, WIA has had an even larger effect on the Youth programs.  Rock River Training Corporation once focused on two separate youth initiatives, year round and Summer programs.  These once independent programs are now required to be part of an integrated youth initiative. On occasion, however, seperate funds are awarded to RRTC that help youth find Summer jobs.

On July 1, 2013, the coordinating entity for WIA youth programs in Boone and Winnebago counties is the WIA Elevate program, operated by Rock Valley College. For more information and/or to enroll please go to their Website at www.rockvalleycollege.edu/elevate or call (815) 921-2260

Youth residing in Stephenson County can contact the Regional Office of Education at 27 S. State Ave., Suite 101, Freeport, IL 61032 or call (815) 599-1408. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 p.m.
